The Healing Crisis Explained

Ever left a massage session feeling unexpectedly emotional or physically tender? You might be wondering if something’s not quite right. Let me assure you – this could actually be a sign that your body is finally ready to heal at a deeper level.

This is what we call a “healing crisis” – though “crisis” isn’t really the right word. It’s more of a reaction, your body responding to the treatment. A natural, if intense, part of the healing journey that, when understood, can profoundly transform your experience.

Unlike a relaxing spa massage, deep therapeutic massage invites you to actively participate in your healing. You’ll breathe deeply and engage with the process as your body releases long-held patterns. It is a form of exercise – your muscles warm up, stretch, and relax, helping blood flow more freely and flush out stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

Sometimes things get worse before they get better. The more stress stored in your body, the more intense this response might be.

Our bodies collect more than just physical tension. They become like storehouses for every experience – daily stress, emotional weight, environmental pressures, all those layers of life that gradually build up. Often, we cope by numbing out, creating a barrier between ourselves and these stored tensions.

What I’ve learned through my own healing journey is that the patterns we carry live primarily in the body, not just in the mind. We can analyze them, journal about them, discuss them in therapy, even understand them intellectually – but they don’t truly release until we work them out from our tissues, our cellular memory.

These accumulated tensions don’t just sit quietly – they actively undermine your wellbeing. They weaken your immunity, drain your vital energy, and disrupt your emotional balance. But here’s where real healing begins: as these layers start to release, you begin feeling more of yourself and less of these conditionings. While this newfound awareness might feel intense at first, it’s actually a powerful sign – what was blocked starts to move.

Understanding Your Body’s Response

Everyone’s healing journey unfolds differently. Your unique path depends on your current state of well-being, lifestyle, natural resilience, individual blockages, openness to change, and the intensity of treatment. There’s no one-size-fits-all experience – your body will guide the process in its own way.

During a healing reaction, you might experience symptoms that feel similar to illness, but they actually signal positive change. This is quite different from adverse reactions to treatment, which tend to worsen over time. This is a temporary phase that indicates progress – think of it as your body’s way of spring cleaning.

Some people experience physical changes – headaches, muscle tenderness, or their digestion shifts. Others notice their sleep patterns changing or their energy levels fluctuating. Sometimes it’s emotional – feelings you didn’t even realize you were carrying start to surface.

Don’t be surprised if old symptoms make a brief comeback – that shoulder tension from your previous job or a rash you had years ago might resurface. These aren’t setbacks; they’re more like memories saying their final goodbye. While these returning symptoms might feel more intense than before, they typically pass much more quickly. Your body is doing one final release of old patterns before letting them go for good.

What I’ve discovered is that when the body releases protective patterns, it often follows a reverse chronology – the most recent tensions dissolve first, gradually moving backward through older, deeper layers.

People often report feeling particularly good or energized right before a healing reaction begins – it’s as if their body gathers extra strength for the release ahead. Even during physical discomfort, there’s usually a sense of inner peace, an intuitive knowing that these changes are temporary and purposeful. This feels quite different from the anxiety that typically comes with illness.

The timing offers another clue – these responses often appear shortly after treatment, showing a clear connection to our therapeutic work. While everyone’s timeline varies, these effects typically resolve within a few hours to a few days, unlike adverse reactions, which tend to worsen over time.

Emotional Release and Integration

It’s not uncommon for vivid memories or waves of feelings to emerge during the healing process. If this catches you off guard, it can feel overwhelming at first – like finding an old photograph that suddenly brings back a flood of memories. Even with a holistic mindset, it can be surprising how unlocking physical tension can lead to unexpected emotional releases.

I’ve learned that when specific emotional issues keep surfacing, it’s often your body’s way of saying “this needs attention now.” True healing requires addressing both physical and emotional aspects – if we work with one while ignoring the other, the pattern often returns in a different form without truly releasing.

When emotions come up during this process, it’s important to give yourself permission to feel them without judgment. The key is allowing the process to unfold in its own timing rather than forcing anything.

Through my own experience as someone who learns through the challenges of trial and error, I’ve developed deep patience with the healing process. I understand how sometimes we need to hit the wall before we can change direction.

When you’re in this process, the most powerful approach isn’t fighting the sensations but accepting them and creating space to move through. Your body heals from the inside out, requiring trust and self-compassion to restore balance.

There’s a line from Lao Tzu that stays with me: “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” Your body is not behind schedule. It is working at the speed this kind of repair actually takes, and the impatience we bring to it is almost always borrowed from somewhere else in our lives.

Make rest your priority – your body needs extra energy for this deep healing. Stay well-hydrated (add a slice of lemon for extra support). Keep your body gently moving through light stretching or walking when you feel stagnation or heaviness. Use conscious breathing to maintain emotional balance. Pay attention to what your body’s telling you about what it needs.

Safety Guidelines

Understanding the difference between a normal healing reaction and something that needs medical attention is crucial for your safety and peace of mind.

Normal healing reactions typically appear within a day or two after treatment. They feel different from your usual illness patterns – there’s often this sense of inner calm even when there’s physical discomfort. These reactions usually improve gradually over a few days, and there’s this feeling like your body is ‘working through something’ rather than fighting against something.

Of course, if you experience severe or worsening symptoms beyond a few days, high fever, or anything that feels alarming or unsafe, trust your instincts and consult with healthcare professionals. I’m always available to discuss what you’re experiencing and help you determine if it sounds like a normal healing response or not.

The Ripple Effect of Personal Healing

Something I hadn’t expected to witness is how the changes move beyond the person on the table.

Clients who release years of tension often tell me months later how differently they’re showing up elsewhere. More patient with their teams. Less reactive in meetings. One parent described how addressing their own patterns helped them stay calm during their teenager’s meltdowns instead of escalating the situation.

They weren’t trying to be better people. They just had less stored up stress. There was more space in them.

As we create space for our bodies to release old tensions, we seem to naturally create more space for others too — without forcing it, without trying. That shift happens quietly, on its own terms.

And the process itself is rarely straight. Sometimes two steps forward, one step back — that’s normal. What we call a “crisis” is often just our patterns breaking down to make way for something more authentic. The healing reaction, while challenging, often marks the threshold between merely coping and truly thriving.

How the Work Deepens

When we begin working together, the first sessions often feel like deep tissue work — because that's what years of accumulated tension actually needs. But something else is also happening underneath that physical relief: your body is starting to recognise its own patterns, sometimes for the first time.

From there, as trust builds between your nervous system and this work, deeper layers become accessible. Tensions that have been there so long you stopped noticing them begin to shift. This is where the real change happens — not in one dramatic session, but gradually.

The third shift is when these changes become your new normal. Clients often describe carrying less — less tension, less reactivity, less of what wasn't theirs to hold in the first place. That's when the work moves from recovery toward maintenance, and the sessions take on a different quality entirely.

Introductory Session

For New Clients

Your first session is about discovery — for both of us. We'll start with a short conversation (10-15 minutes) so I understand what's brought you here and what your body has been carrying. Then we move into hands-on work, and I let what I find there guide us rather than following a fixed routine. Most people are surprised by where the tension actually lives — it's rarely only where it hurts.

Returning Clients

Follow-up sessions have a different quality. Your body already knows what this work feels like, which means it tends to drop into release faster and deeper. We go further with less effort — and that's when the more persistent patterns start to become moveable.
