The Greeks and Romans also deeply valued massage. Julius Caesar himself received daily massages to alleviate neuralgia, a painful nerve condition. Hippocrates, often called the father of modern medicine, wisely stated, “The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing…. For rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose, and loosen a joint that is too rigid.”

Fast forward to the 19th century, and we see the emergence of Swedish massage, developed by Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish physiologist and fencing master. Ling’s techniques laid the foundation for many contemporary practices, including deep tissue, sports, and aromatherapy massage.
