I remember my own first experience as a client—feeling both hopeful and uncertain about what might unfold. Personally, I tend to feel a little anxious about new experiences. I’m a slow learner, and when stepping into something unfamiliar, I like to do my research and investigation as much as possible. If you’re anything like me, having a sense of what to expect can make all the difference. That’s exactly why I’m sharing this—to offer you insight into your first session, so you can feel prepared, comfortable, and open to the experience. Because this journey is yours, and you deserve to step into it with confidence.
People often ask about pressure or techniques, but what I sense they’re really wondering about is whether this space will feel safe enough to let their guard down. Many arrive carrying some worry about being judged for their body or the tension they’re holding. But here’s what I’ve learned through years of practice: that tension is not you, it is simply part of your story, and this space is free from judgment. I like to see the big picture and focus on feeling better.
Before We Meet
When you book your session, I’ll send you a simple intake form that helps me understand your unique story and what brings you here. Please take a few moments to share what you’re comfortable with – this helps me create a session that truly serves your needs. Everything you share stays completely confidential.
You’ll just need:
- An area about the size of a single bed (83″/211cm x 31″/79cm)
- A plug for the heated blanket (if you need one)
- Temperature set where you’re comfortable
- Your choice of calming music or my carefully chosen playlist (up to you)
- Dimmed lights or candles (if you like)
To help create the most supportive environment, let household members know this is your time for uninterrupted relaxation. Silence your phone and other devices – this helps your system truly settle into the healing space.
Before the session, taking a warm shower or bath can help your muscles begin to soften. Stay hydrated to ensure your muscles are responsive to the treatment. If eating, keep it light and give yourself an hour’s space before.
Your First Session
A profound shift in my approach came after working with a client who arrived extremely nervous about her first-ever massage. Instead of diving into technique explanations, I simply sat with her for a few minutes, acknowledging her concerns and listening for her questions. The most important thing in first sessions isn’t the bodywork itself – it’s establishing connection through trust and safety.
When I arrive, we’ll begin with a gentle conversation about your needs and goals. We’ll talk for about 15 minutes at the start, which is included in your session time. Some people need to share more about their experience before feeling ready for hands-on work, while others prefer to move straight to the table – both approaches are perfectly valid, and we’ll follow what feels right for you.
I’ll explain how we’ll work together, though I always stay flexible and adapt to what your body reveals during the session. Sometimes I might work in areas you didn’t expect – this is all part of helping your system release tension patterns most effectively. Your body often knows the path to healing better than your thinking mind.
You’ll have privacy to undress to whatever level feels comfortable for you. Whether that means keeping clothes on or having just underwear is entirely your choice. Ladies typically keep pants on while removing bras for better access to back muscles. I provide complete draping throughout, only uncovering the area being worked on.
Remember to remove any jewelry and hair accessories before we begin. I’ll knock before re-entering the room.
The session typically starts with a few moments of stillness, allowing you to settle into your body and focus on your breath. I may begin with gentle compressions to prepare your muscles for deeper work.
Throughout our time together, your comfort is my priority. If anything feels uncomfortable—the stretch, the pressure, the position of the face cradle, or even the music—please let me know. This is your time.
From here, I’ll start addressing your specific goals. Sometimes I won’t begin directly on your main area of concern, as working on other parts of the body can better prepare the target area for deeper attention. You’re encouraged to be fully present in the process—through deep breathing, moving when needed, or simply staying in tune with the sensations.
You don’t need to help move your arms, legs, or head unless I ask you to. The less you try to “help,” the more your body can relax and heal. I might invite you to breathe into specific areas or move in certain ways to deepen the healing process. For chest or abdominal work, I use special draping, and during stretches, you might help hold the drape.
You don’t need to make small talk or apologize for anything. Take this opportunity to simply be present and listen to your body. You also don’t need to stay quiet either. If you feel like talking, there’s no reason to hold back. In fact, if something doesn’t feel quite right, I need your feedback. If something hurts or if you could use more pressure, I encourage you to speak up. When it comes to your body, you’re the expert in the room. If at any point you’re unsure why I’m focusing on a particular area, feel free to ask. I will share what I am noticing.
The session often builds to its deepest work more than halfway through, after your body is fully prepared. Toward the end, I’ll focus on integrating the changes with gentle techniques, so you leave feeling both nurtured and complete.
After Your Session
After I leave the room, take your time getting up and dressed. We can talk about your experience or simply let it settle – whatever serves your journey best. You might notice feeling deeply relaxed afterward, or experience increased body awareness, or soreness.
Stay hydrated and give yourself time to let the changes settle in. You may feel immediate relief, or notice changes unfold gradually over days. There is no right or wrong way to experience the integration—only your body finding its own path back to balance.
If you have any questions before your session, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
For those wanting to continue the journey, know that each session builds upon the previous one. Understanding how to maximize your results between sessions can enhance your healing experience significantly.
